MPA POA coding screens published in AHIMA research journal • 10.26.09

MPA’s cost-effective and powerful method of evaluating the coding quality of enhanced claims data was published in an article titled Screening algorithms to assess the accuracy of present-on-admission coding in the Winter 2009 issue of Perspectives in Health Information Management.

Currently, there is wide variability in the accuracy and consistency of POA coding across hospitals. Inaccurate coding can distort analyses of risk-adjusted outcomes and determinations of hospital reimbursement. MPA’s screens are particularly valuable with the increased interest in using POA coding in public reporting of comparative hospital quality, pay-for-performance programs (including the CMS “never events” non-payment strategy), and quality improvement initiatives.
