Michael Pine MD, MBA, President
Biography
Dr. Pine is president and founder of Michael Pine and Associates, Inc., an innovative consulting firm that specializes in measuring and improving the clinical quality of health care across the nation.
Since 1988, Dr. Pine has assisted scores of hospitals, clinicians and others to analyze and evaluate data on clinical quality and healthcare delivery and to apply the findings to their clinical and managerial decisions. His innovations have included a measure for adverse outcomes that is more objective than reported complications, separate length-of-stay indicators for effectiveness and efficiency, and episode-based risk adjustment for global reimbursement. He has completed an evaluation of MediQual Inc.’s risk adjustment for presentation to the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council, and more recently, a study on Addition of Clinical Data Elements to Administrative Data for Hospital-level Reporting for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) in the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services.
Dr. Pine has been on the medical faculties of major academic medical centers, has published original scientific studies in basic science, clinical medicine, and health services research, and has co-authored a manual on “Measuring and Managing Health Care Quality” and a “Guide to Developing and Implementing a Value-Centered Benefits Plan.” He has written numerous chapters and articles on monitoring and improving the quality and cost-effectiveness of health care services and has organized, moderated, and participated in a host of educational seminars on this subject – topics including Predictive Modeling, Patient Compliance, Physician Scorecarding and Pay-for-Performance healthcare initiatives. Articles by Dr. Pine frequently appear in professional journals, most recently in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) entitled “Cost-Effective Enhancement of Claims Data to Improve Comparisons of Risk-Adjusted Hospital Mortality”.
Dr. Pine is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology. He has served on the medical faculties of Harvard, the University of California at Irvine, the University of Cincinnati, and the University of Chicago. He is the author of numerous publications in basic science, clinical medicine, medical decision making, and quality monitoring and evaluation. Dr. Pine is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and the University of Cincinnati School of Business.
